Not one of Walter Scott’s finest novels, this dramatisation is a joy for its simplification of an over-elaborate plot.

The beautiful Catherine (Morven Christie), a lowly glover’s daughter, is desired by four men from very different backgrounds, ranging from a bonnet-maker to a prince. These are lawless times in 14th-century Scotland, where even the king cannot expect any better than treachery, so what hope has a young virgin to be treated well?

Enter her most stalwart defender, the brawling blacksmith Henry (Bryan Larkin), who will fight to the death for her love. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable rip-roaring romp, with the gold-dust sparkle that always accompanies David Tennant, this time narrating the story in the guise of Scott.

Believe It! Repeated By BBC Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra From Today

The award winning radio comedy series Believe It! which stars Richard Wilson with David Tennant, Arabella Weir and John Sessions, begins a repeat run on BBC Radio from this evening. 

The fictional comedy biography of Richard Wilson was written by Jon Canter and narrated by the actor himself, and features dramatised scenes from both his true and untrue life. The show, which was first broadcast in May 2012, won Best Scripted Comedy in this year's BBC Audio Drama Awards.

Believe It! And Kafka Among Winners In The BBC Audio Drama Awards

David Tennant was the host of the second BBC Audio Drama Awards tonight. The awards pay tribute to the cultural importance of audio drama, on air and online, and are intended to give recognition to the actors, writers, producers, sound designers and others who work in the genre. David was among an illustrious guest list at the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House in London, which also included Maxine Peake, Stephen Mangan, Andrew Davies, Sian Phillips, Nicholas Parsons and fellow Doctor Sylvester McCoy.

Two productions that David himself was involved with were nominated this year and happily there was award success for both. Screenwriter Andrew Davies announced that the winner of the Tinniswood Award for Best Radio Script was Murray Gold for Kafka The Musical, which was recorded starring David Tennant as Franz Kafka for broadcast in 2011. Nicholas Parsons then presented the Best Scripted Comedy award to Jon Canter for his spoof autobiography series Believe It! which starred Richard Wilson, Arabella Weir and John Sessions alongside David.

David Tennant Hosts The BBC Audio Drama Awards This Evening

David Tennant is due to be taking up compère duties again tonight for the second annual BBC Audio Drama Awards. David hosted the inaugural awards last year where he was also named Best Actor in an Audio Drama for his role in Kafka The Musical.The ceremony will be held in the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House in London.

Two of David's audio projects are up for awards this year:

Believe It! -written by Jon Canter and produced by Clive Brill of Pacificus Productions. The comedy series starred Richard Wilson, David Tennant, Arabella Weir and John Sessions and purported to be based on Wilson's own life. The show is nominated for Best Scripted Comedy.

Kafka The Musical - written by Murray Gold and produced and directed by Jeremy Mortimer. David Tennant stars as Franz Kafka, who finds he has to play himself in a musical about his own life. The judges from the Society of Authors and the Writers' Guild of Great Britain said: "Kafka The Musical genuinely took the listener somewhere different, maybe somewhere that doesn't exist - riffing off Kafkaesque surrealism to create its own new brand of surreal radio". The drama is nominated for the Tinniswood Radio Drama Award 2012 for Best Radio Drama Script.

Audio Drama Award Nominations For Two David Tennant Projects

The BBC Media Centre have published the shortlist for the BBC Audio Drama Awards 2013 and two projects that David Tennant has been involved in are nominated. Believe It!, the comedy autobiography starring Richard Wilson and featuring David as the actor's younger self, is nominated for Best Scripted Comedy while Murray Gold's Kafka: The Musical is shortlisted for the Tinniswood Radio Drama Award 2012 for Best Radio Drama Script. David won the Best Actor Award last year for his role as Franz Kafka in Gold's play.


The BBC say:

The shortlist for the BBC Audio Drama Awards 2013 has been announced this morning. The awards pay tribute to the cultural importance of audio drama, on air and online, and are intended to give recognition to the actors, writers, producers, sound designers and others who work in the genre.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held on Sunday 27 January 2013 in the Radio Theatre at BBC Broadcasting House in central London.

The BBC is delighted also to be joining forces for a second time with the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and the Society of Authors for this year’s Imison Award for best original radio drama by a writer new to radio, and the Tinniswood Award for best original radio drama.

In its inaugural year, the BBC Drama Awards 2012 - the first awards of its kind - received more than 150 entries from dramas created across the country and internationally. Winners included David Tennant for Best Actor, acclaimed writer Katie Hims for Best Audio Drama, Andrew Scott for Best Supporting Actor and writer Hugh Hughes for Best Scripted Comedy Drama. This year, more than 180 entries were received.

Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has always said he'd never write one.
Based on glimmers of truth, BELIEVE IT is the hilarious, bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity radiography of Richard Wilson.
He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true). All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are wonderfully undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery.
(The title - in case you hadn't spotted - is an unashamed reference to his famous catchphrase.)
