In response to recent tabloid rumours that Christopher Eccleston had pulled out of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special just as it began filming, the BBC have now confirmed that Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 season, was never attached to the show.
An official source said:
"Chris met with Steven Moffat a couple of times to talk about Steven's plans for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode. After careful thought, Chris decided not to be in the episode. He wishes the team all the best."
On Saturday, the BBC confirmed that David Tennant and Billie Piper would be returning as the Tenth Doctor and Rose for the special episode which began filming in Wales this week. They join Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman with John Hurt and Joanna Page also confirmed as cast members. The episode, which will be shot in 3D, is expected to be screened (in 3D and 2D) on the day of the anniversary, Saturday 23rd November, and will also have a limited cinematic release.
