NORFOLK -- A man scheduled to die today for the murders of four people in Norfolk has been granted a 90-day stay of execution by U.S. District Court in Richmond.
Anthony Juniper was convicted in the 2004 deaths of his ex-girlfriend, her brother and her two children.
A request to the U.S. Supreme Court was made a few days ago because his attorneys said they wanted the state to grant him a new hearing.
Brian Gottstein, spokesman for Va. Attorney General's office, told WVEC.com, "This is a routine stay that federal law permits so Juniper can file a habeas corpus action in the U.S. District Court."
The Virginia Supreme Court had denied a similar appeal.
There was no comment on the decision from the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney office.
Juniper will be returned to death row at Sussex I State Prison, Larry Traylor, spokesman for the Va. Dept. of Corrections, told WVEC.com.
