A Virginia court has set a March 18 execution date for a man who killed a 16-year-old girl and bragged about it in a letter to prosecutors once he thought he couldn't be convicted.
31-year-old Paul Warner Powell was set to be executed in July, but the U.S. Supreme Court stopped it while it considered whether to take up his claim that he was unconstitutionally tried twice for the same crime. The court on Monday refused to hear his appeal.
On Wednesday, a Prince William County Circuit Court judge set the date.
Powell was convicted of killing Stacie Lynn Reed in 1999, but the Virginia Supreme Court overturned that verdict. Powell then wrote a taunting letter to prosecutors detailing the crime. He was convicted again in 2003.
Powell has chosen to die by electrocution.
