David Tennant Review Of 2013: July - August

We continue with our review of David Tennant's projects in 2013 as the year moves into the summer months. Shooting wraps on What We Did On Our Holiday and Broadchurch starts to reach an international audience. David starts rehearsals for Richard II and we have the first look at The Escape Artist.

TV

Chris Chibnall revealed that he had written the opening and closing scenes for Broadchurch 2. Although no official casting announcements were made, Olivia Colman hinted that she had signed on for the new series and Holby City actress Tina Hobley said that she had tried out for a role. 

Broadchurch and the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special both featured on panels at the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles.

There was more praise for David from his co-stars: Olivia Colman called him "An angel and an absolute sweetheart" while Simone McAulley said that people would watch him read the phone book. The series won the Best Of British award at the Freesat Awards and was shortlisted, along with David and Olivia, for the TV Choice Awards. Broadchurch premiered on ABC1 on July 11th and it was announced that it would be shown in New Zealand, France, Sweden and Brazil. BBC America posted a clip of the cast attending the first read though in London in 2012

Steven Moffat said that David Tennant and Matt Smith were 'gorgeous together' in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special and that the show definitely revolved around the two of them. Matt Smith talked about his love for David and the great time they's had shooting the special. He also said that his first scene with David was on the TARDIS.
Steven Moffat, Matt Smith and Jenna Colman attended the Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic Con. Controversy raged when fans attending the panel were shown a rough-cut preview clip of the 50th Anniversary special while the rest of the world still awaited a trailer or official pictures. The BBC were forced to release a press statement to the effect that a trailer had not been released to American TV audiences and that BBC viewers could expect exciting and exclusive content over the coming months. They also issued photos and a press release that confirmed the return of the Daleks and began speculation that the Anniversary special would cover the Time War. 

Although the attendees at Comic Con had been sworn to secrecy about the content of the trailer, the Daily Star went ahead and published some spoilers:
"Eleven whips out his impressive sonic screwdriver and boasts to Ten ‘Mine's bigger than yours!’

Ten hits back with a snipe about the new TARDIS design ‘You've redecorated ... I don't like it.’"

It was also announced by BBC Worldwide that the 50th Anniversary episode would be simulcast worldwide.

The BFI announced that they would be screening The Stolen Earth and Journey's End for their Tenth Doctor Doctor Who at 50 event on Sunday 29th September.

Shakespeare Uncovered was released on DVD in Australia

Theatre

The  iPad App version of the Royal Shakespeare Winter 2013 programme release featured exclusive behind the scenes photos of David's Richard II photoshoot.

Film

Shooting on What We Did On Our Holiday wrapped towards the end of the month. Annette Crosbie was added to the cast list and Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling revealed that she and Billy Connolly had shot scenes for the film there. The film's producer Dan Winch spoke to the Clydebank Post about theplot and shooting locations.

There was another release date change for Postman Pat: The Movie, this time moving to Christmas Day 2013.

Broadchurch premiered on TV in the USA, Canada, Brazil and Sweden. It was also announced that the series would be coming to Russia, France, Norway, Finland, Latin America and Germany. The series was released on DVD in Australia

USA Today went as far as calling Broadchurch the best new show of the summer.
More series 2 rumours grew as Arthur Darvill and Simone McAullay both suggested that their characters would return. There was further award success when both Broadchurch and Chris Chibnall were honoured at the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. There were also nominations for the cast and series in the Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards.
David visited the USA in August and was interviewed on NPR Weekend Edition about Broadchurch

Fox TV announced that they would be producing a US version of Broadchurch. The series would be executive produced by Chris Chibnall along with Carolyn Bernstein of Shine America and Jane Featherstone of Kudos.

Jenna Coleman described shooting the Doctor Who Anniversary Special as being like 'a big family'. David said that working with Matt Smith proved to be a real joy.
UKTV in Australia announced that they would be screening BBC America's The Doctors Revisited to which David had contributed.

The BFI confirmed that David would be attending their Tenth Doctor screening on 29th September

Peter Capaldi was announced as the Twelfth Doctor in a live BBC One TV special that was simulcast to the USA, Canada and Australia.

As we move towards late spring, filming wraps on Doctor Who and David takes on a new film project. David also enjoys award success.

TV
Broadchurch  was released on DVD on 20th May, with the 3-disc set including a Behind The Scenes documentary. Watch a clip here:

Joe Sims talked to us exclusively about Broadchurch including what it was like to work with David.
David talked about Olivia Colman while Olivia anticipated Broadchurch 2: "It sounds really, really exciting!". She also revealed that the stars of the show stayed sober because they were scared that they would inadvertently let slip the ending.
The drama was scheduled to begin on BBC America on August 7th, and the broadcaster launched their Broadchurch page.
The Stage listed Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller among their Top TV Detectives and TV Choice opened the first round of voting for their 2013 Awards, inviting votes for David, Olivia and Broadchurch.

Shooting of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special wrapped on May 5th. Doctor Who Magazine confirmed that David would be the only past Doctor to return for the episode.

Some of the stars of the special talked about taking part. John Hurt hinted for the first time that he would be playing an incarnation of the Doctor. Billie Piper said, "The show is a gift" and that David Tennant and Matt Smith were her good friends and were both brilliant. Jemma Redgrave said, "It’s philosophical, it’s deep, it’s funny, it’s heartbreaking, it’s just great and it’s got an extraordinary cast." As rumours and speculation about the special grew, Steven Moffat warned fans not to believe everything that he heard...or didn't hear. He also spoke about David and Matt having the two Doctors on set together:

"Matt and David together was quite special. They really, really, really got on well with each other and adored working with each other. It was just properly funny. The two of them together in particular are really, really funny."

The Politician's Husband concluded on BBC Two with almost 2 million tuning in to discover whether disgraced MP Aidan Hoynes would better his political rivals and regain power. The drama was released on DVD on the 13th May. It was also announced that the drama would be shown in Australia.

David was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for his voice work in Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Spies Of Warsaw was broadcast on UKTV in Australia from May 4th and on ARTE in France and Germany from May 17th.

There was BAFTA success for Twenty Twelve: the series narrated by David won the Best Situation Comedy award, while star Olivia Colman was awarded best Female Performance In A Comedy Programme

David contributed to BBC America's special The Doctors Revisited: The Fifth Doctor on Peter Davison.

Theatre

It was announced that Richard II starring David would be streamed live to cinemas across the UK and around the world. Director Greg Doran explained that he had been planning this for some time.

A new film project was announced for David, What We Did On Our Holiday, which would start shooting in June.The comedy, written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin would be filmed on location in Scotland and was scheduled for a UK release in 2014. The film also starred Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller and Amelia Bullmore. An Australian distribution deal was struck for the film before shooting even began.

Rubicon Group Holding, the animators of the Postman Pat movie, revealed the the film was in the final stages of production.

David won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for his work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. 

Dave Filoni, supervising director of the show said: "I am very excited to report that David Tennant has won an Emmy for his portrayal of Huyang in Clone Wars.David is a lifelong Star Wars fan and he has definitely made an indelible mark on the Star Wars universe that generations of fans will enjoy for years to come. Thank you David, the Force is strong with you."

It was announced that Broadchurch would be released on Blu-ray in the UK. The series would also be airing in Australia in July, Canada in August and in Spain. BBC America released promotional photos and an extended preview: 

Olivia Colman talked to My Weekly about working with David. She said, "David Tennant is gorgeous. He is so jolly and happy and witty. Working with him was a big delight.We has a giggle being mean to each other. He is so warm and charming. On Broadchurch we would all go to the pub and out for dinner. It was like a big family."
Joanna Page talked about taking part in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special. However, the big Doctor Who news was Matt Smith announcing that he would be leaving the show at Christmas. Speculation about his replacement began almost immediately, and David topped the IGN vote as Most Wanted For the Twelfth Doctor
The Doctor Who Regeneration DVD and Book Set was released on DVD in the UK

David voiced the character of Oscar's Brain in an episode of animated kids' series Fish Hooks: Live From The Hamsterwood Bowl which premiered on Disney Channel in the USA on 21st June.

The three part wildlife documentary Penguins: Spy In The Huddle from John Downer Productions and narrated by David aired in New Zealand

On 3rd June,tickets went on sale for the live screenings of Richard II in UK cinemas.

Film

On 17th June, filming began on David's new feature film What We Did On Our Holiday. Scottish locations included Glasgow, Doune, Milngavie, Dumbarton and the Highlands, and Celia Imrie was added to the cast. Photos from filming can be seen here and here. One day, the shoot reportedly caused traffic mayhem on the road between Dumbarton and Balloch as a breakdown scene was filmed.

Audiobooks 

David recorded an audiobook version of the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang novel by Ian Fleming.

David Tennant leant his support to 'The Most Important Thing', a campaign launched by UNCHR, the UN Refugee Agency, to highlight the plight of those forced to flee their homes.

BBC Films now have a webpage for David Tennant's newest film project What We Did On Our Holiday.

At present the site gives no new information for the film, which co-stars Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller and Annette Crosbie,  but will be a page to watch over the next few months ahead of the comedy's 2014 release.

About the film

From the creators of the hit BBC comedy series Outnumbered- WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAY is a heart-warming, uplifting comedy for all the family.

About the film:

NEW PHOTO: David Tennant And Ben Miller Reel In A Catch On A Filming Break

David Tennant and Ben Miller turned their hands to a bit of trout fishing during a break from shooting their new comedy film What We Did On Our Holiday in Scotland a few weeks ago. David and Ben, who play brothers Doug and Gavin McLeod in the film, took to the water in Wester Ross, with obvious success.

What We Did On Our Holiday is the directorial debut of Outnumbered creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin and follows a chaotic trip to Scotland by a couple on the verge of divorce, in the company of their three children. The film also stars Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, Annette Crosbie, Celia Imrie and Amelia Bullmore, with Harriet Turnbull, Bobby Smalldridge and Emilia Jones as the McLeod children. Filming wrapped on the 2nd August and the movie, a co-production between BBC Films and Origin Pictures, is scheduled for a 2014 release.

First Pictures Of Billy Connolly On The What We Did On Our Holiday Set

Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling have released some photos of Billy Connolly and director Andy Hamilton on the set of What We Did On Our Holiday. Billy filmed scenes at the wildlife park on Friday along with co-star Annette Crosbie. 

What We Did On Our Holiday stars David Tennant and Rosamund Pike as Doug and Abi McLeod, a London-based couple going through a difficult divorce. However, they decide to put their differences aside temporarily aside to travel back to Doug's native Scotland to celebrate the 75th birthday of Doug's father Gordy, played by Billy Connolly. However, an unexpected turn of events along the way involving the couple's three children causes chaos and further tensions to rise to the surface. The comedy marks the directorial debut of Outnumbered creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin and is sure to be as touching and hilarious as the BBC sitcom. The film also stars Ben Miller as Doug's brother Gavin, with Amelia Bullmore, Celia Imrie and young stars Harriet Turnbull, Bobby Smalldridge and Emilia Jones.

According to Herald Scotland, Annette Crosbie is the latest addition to the known cast of What We Did On Our Holiday. The comedy film stars David Tennant, Rosamund Pike and Billy Connolly and has been shooting on location in Scotland since June.

Annette Crosbie is a noted Scottish actress of both stage and screen. She will be most familiar to TV audiences as Margaret Meldrew, long-suffering wife to Victor in One Foot In The Grave, and she has also appeared in Little Dorritt, Jonathan Creek and Doctor Who - The Eleventh Hour.

What We Did On Our Holiday follows the misadventures of divorcing couple Doug and Abi McLeod, played by David Tennant and Rosamund Pike, as they undertake a chaotic trip with their three children up to Scotland to celebrate the 75th birthday of Doug's father Gordy (Billy Connolly). The film also stars Celia Imrie, Ben Miller and Amelia Bullmore, with young actors Harriet Turnbull, Bobby Smalldridge and Emilia Jones as Doug and Abi's children. The film is written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Perkin, the creators of BBC One's Outnumbered, and is co-produced by BBC Films and Origin Pictures with additional backing from Creative Scotland. David Tennant Due To Complete Filming On What We Did On Our Holiday This Week

The Paisley Daily Express has revealed that David Tennant is due to complete filming his scenes on his new movie What We Did on Our Holiday this week.

A source, who described David as 'an absolute joy' to work with, said, “He shot all of his scenes in the first four weeks. David is a true professional in every sense of the word but that doesn't stop him mingling with the crew and having a bit of banter. He is fantastic on set and really knows his stuff, which is sure to help make What We Did On Our Holiday a big success when it is released next year.”

David will play the part of Doug McLeod, a Scot now living in London with his wife Abi (Rosamund Pike) and their three children. In the midst of a marriage breakdown the family have to undertake a trip back to Scotland to celebrate the 75th birthday of Doug's father Gordy, played by Billy Connolly. They instruct their children to keep details of their impending divorce quiet, but on the trip up north, Doug and Abi start to lose control as the kids' antics send things awry. The film has been written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, the creative forces behind the BBC's Outnumbered, and they have employed the same semi-improvised techniques as the award-winning sitcom to ensure the same air of barely controlled chaos.

The production has been filming this week at a large house in Croftamie near Drymen, close to Loch Lomond, which has been standing in for the Scottish Highland home of Gordy and Doug's brother Gavin, played by Ben Miller. Other scenes have been filmed around Glasgow, which has doubled in some cases for London. The films insider told the Daily Express, “The entire film is being shot in Scotlandbut the house where David’s character lives is supposed to be in London, which meant having to find a ‘double’. We settled on a modest location in Scotstoun. Doug isn't as well-off as his brother or his dad, so the terraced house fitted the bill perfectly.”

What We Did On Our Holiday also stars Amelia Bullmore and Celia Imrie, and Doug and Abi's children are played by Bobby Smalldridge, Harriet Turnbull and Emilia Jones. Emilia is the daughter of singer and presenter Aled Jones and was recently seen as Merry in Doctor Who - The Rings Of Akhaten.

The film is a joint production between BBC Films and Origin Pictures and is scheduled for release in 2014

What We Did On Our Holiday Producer Talks To Clydebank Post

Dan Winch, the producer of What We Did On Our Holiday, has been talking to the Clydebank Post about the choice of locations for the movie. The BBC Films and Origin Pictures co-production, starring David Tennant and Rosamund Pike, is being shot on location in Scotland with a number of scenes filmed in the Scotstoun district of Glasgow, which has, the producer says, a unique visual impact. He said

"What I think is good about that area is the variety of architecture. You can go from one street to the next and imagine you're in a different city. It doesn't necessarily tie you to Glasgow.

"We filmed streets in a bit more of an urban setting. We were looking for somewhere which looks as if it's in the south of England. That's why we came to that part of town because the architecture is quite hard to pin point where it's from. Unless you're living in the street or are round the corner from the street you probably wouldn't know you weren't in London.

"We searched high and low for a house that felt like it was in the right part of Scotland. We'll be at this location for another couple of weeks. We are at a private house that appears in the film. We went up to a few options, we saw many different houses all offering different things but we settled on this one."

He also spoke a little about the plot.

"It starts in London, it's a family going to visit the other half of the family up in Scotland," he said, "We follow the journey from Londonwith all the things we can relate to when going on a family holiday, packing up the car, and 'are we nearly there yet?' with kids in the car, that type of thing.

"We are filming for the next five weeks. One of our biggest challenges is working with the restrictions of working with children, especially when they're the driving factor behind the story. It's geared round them.”

Finally Dan had great things to say about filming in Scotland.

“Everybody in Scotland has been so welcoming, we've had terrific support. We couldn't have completed the film if we hadn't had the support." he said.

What We Did On Our Holiday is written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, the team behind the hit BBC sitcom Outnumbered. David Tennant and Rosumund Pike play divorcing husband and wife Doug and Abi who take their three children on a trip to Scotland for a family celebration while pretending for the sake of the rest of the family that all is well with their marriage. Billy Connolly also stars, along with Ben Miller, Amelia Bullmore and Celia Imrie. Shooting will continue until the start of August and the film is scheduled for a 2014 cinematic release.

David Tennant's Film Shoot Causes Travel Mayhem

Production of David Tennant's new movie, What We Did On Our Holiday caused travel chaos yesterday as the filmmakers shot a sequence along the busy A82 in Dumbartonshire. Motorists travelling between Dumbarton and Balloch ground to a halt as they were forced to wait while David was filmed in a Toyota being towed by an HGV. Police motorcyclists ran a rolling road block as the action took up both lanes of the carriageway.

It's not the first time that David's presence has caused a traffic incident while filming. Last year, while he was shooting the ITV drama Broadchurch on location, a motorist was so preoccupied by the sight of him at the side of the road that they ran into the back of the car in front. David and co-star Olivia Colman said that no-one was hurt, although both drivers were too embarrassed to exchange insurance details and quickly drove away.

What We Did On Our Holiday is a co-production between BBC Films and Origin Pictures. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike star as feuding couple Doug and Abi who put their differences aside temporarily to take their three children aside to celebrate a family birthday in Scotland. The film is written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, the creators of Outnumbered and the new production will use the same semi-improvisational techniques as the successful BBC comedy. The film also stars Billy Connolly, Ben Miller, Celia Imrie and Amelia Bullmore.

What We Did On Our Holiday: Milngavie Residents On Meeting David Tennant

Residents of the Scottish town Milngavie have been talking about their experiences of having the cast and crew of David Tennant's latest film project, What We Did On Out Holiday, filming amongst them.
Scenes for the comedy were recorded there last Wednesday and local teashop owner Anne Gibb has been talking to the Milngavie And Bearsden Herald about meeting with David Tennant.

The film, which is partly improvised, focuses on Doug (David Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike) who are taking their three children on a trip to Scotland for a big family gathering. They are in the midst of a difficult divorce, and have asked the kids to keep it a secret from their extended family. But as the inevitable feuds kick in, a completely unexpected turn of events involving the children causes further tensions to rise to the surface. And with the repercussions that ensue - hilarious and emotional in equal measure - the family are forced to put aside their differences and work together or else risk losing what they hold most dear.

Anne said: “We heard some of the lines and it was very funny.

“The children were very good, giving them the opportunity to say things off script is a great idea as kids naturally say the funniest things sometimes.

“It was a fun day although it was tiring, the crew were here from 8am to 2pm.

“I was on my feet all day walking back and forwards to their table.

“Every time they cut the filming we had to remember where we were standing for when the camera started rolling again so that was a bit tricky.

“David Tennant seemed really nice and he said we had a lovely tearoom.

“They reorganised all the furniture and told us they had specifically needed a tearoom which was upstairs.”

Filming has also taken place in Doune, Scotstoun and Croftamie.

Meeting David Tennant - A Fan Account

Lucky fan Megan Watt was able to watch some of the filming of David Tennant's new film What We Did On Our Holiday earlier this week, and got to meet the man himself after filming on Tuesday. 

Megan (second left, next to David) told us:

"He is lovely! He was very nice to everyone and even though the crew were trying to get him off the set to leave, he stayed until everyone had a picture/something signed!

"He was very polite to people who had been waiting and made time for everyone"

PHOTOS: What We Did On Our Holiday Filming Update

Filming on the new BBC Films production What We Did On Our Holiday moved to Doune near Stirling today. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike were observed filming scenes around the village centre, where local florists Jennifer's Flowers had been transformed for the day to stand in as a hotel. They also filmed shots outside the Red Lion Inn.

On Twitter, Shaun Maher (@Shaun4Maher) came across filming on his way back from work and also took a few shots.

What We Did On Our Holiday is a co-production between BBC Fims and Origin Pictures with additional funding from Creative Scotland. It will be shooting on location in Scotland until 3rd August and is scheduled for a 2014 cinematic release.
