Vicky McClure Says That Broadchurch Viewers Will Be Stunned By The Final Reveal

Vicky McClure, who plays sly journalist Karen White in the gripping ITV drama series Broadchurch says that viewers will be in for a big shock when the identity of the killer is finally revealed. Audiences have been trying to guess who killed young Danny Latimer over the last five weeks, and writer Chris Chibnall has given them a wide cast of credible suspects from which to choose.

Vicky told the Sunday People: “Every day I get asked who the killer is – but I’m never going to say. We didn’t know until the end of the shoot. We filmed it not knowing, which was great because it added to the tension on set. When we did find out it was a big surprise. I think people are going to be shocked when it is revealed.”

The drama has even led to betting agents Ladbrookes opening a book on the likely killer. At the time of writing, DS Miller's husband Joe is evens favourite to be the murderer, while David Tennant's character DI Alec Hardy has crept up from an unfavoured 50/1 to odds of 8/1. Vicky herself, as Karen White, is given odds of 14/1.

David Tennant and Olivia Colman star in the eight part series as the two mismatched police detectives who are trying to solve the boy's murder in a small community that is being pulled apart by the impact of the event. The series continues on Monday 8th April at 9pm on ITV

Broadchurch's Vicky McClure On Playing Karen White

Journalism is not a career that Vicky McClure was cut out for but in Broadchurch she plays a national news reporter on the trail of a story.

“It was never something I thought about doing nor would it be something I'd want to get involved in. I think it takes a very specific person to be a journalist and I'm just not that person,” says Vicky.
“But in Broadchurch I think you will see that Karen is very dedicated to her job, but also conscious of the position she holds. She can be ruthless but I wanted to try and show she felt real sympathy for the family too.”

Talking more about her character Vicky continues: “I think Karen probably started off on her local paper in the Midlands and made her way up to the Herald. She is a determined woman, who really enjoys her job but she is also very human. “With the Leveson inquiry going on while we were filming it was quite interesting portraying a reporter on this sort of case. She's definitely one that needs to get the story out there but she is very aware of how families are affected by the death of a child in the long run and she is cautious with that. Karen is a good person but being a journalist she also has that job to fulfil. The look of Karen is totally different to the other roles I’ve played; I imagined her to be quite feminine. The styling always adds that extra layer to your characters. I think when I look at Karen now she has had some moments when she has shown signs of being a tough journalist, trying to make a bit of a name for herself. Continually wanting to be the best she can has sometimes meant she has done things that perhaps she wouldn't want to have done but I think she has tried to stay as true to herself as she can. She has previously come across Hardy in connection with another case, details of that encounter are revealed throughout the series and that adds an extra twist.”

What part does Karen play in the overall story?
“She is an outsider. Karen's role in Broadchurch is to highlight the journalistic side of cases like this and how the media do completely dominate certain areas. I have a lot of scenes with Jonathan Bailey and Caroline Pickles as they're the local newspaper reporter and editor and we end up connecting. It's a really interesting group, and there have been lighter moments with us three because we are not connected to the families in such a direct way.”

So did Vicky undertake any research for the role?
 "I understand that actors go away and research certain roles and think it is really vital in some cases. When I played Lol in This is England I didn’t research everything she was going through, I had a good idea, had spoken to a few people about certain things like postnatal depression but I just believed it and lived it. So basically I just tried to create the character of Karen through the script. Chris Chibnall had done a hell of a lot of research so it all feeds into the script. Plus I've met journalists before and got on really well with them, we’ve built up good relationships and they have written exactly what I've said. It is just frustrating how things are twisted sometimes so I can appreciate that frustration and there are certainly moments of that in the show when what is put in the headlines dominates the actions that next occur. So the portrayal is a mixture of what’s on the page and what I know.”

You spent a lot of time filming on location in the West Country, what were the highs and lows for you?
 “The highlight was my week long stay in the caravan park where we filmed. I didn't have many scenes that week so had a lovely time by the sea. The West Country is a beautiful place to film. The low point was the last scene we shot on the beach. The weather wasn't great and we were all holding these lanterns but the wax was going everywhere and I just imagined my hair extensions catching fire!”

New Promo Photos From Episode 2 Of Broadchurch

The Radio Times have released a batch of new promotional photos from episode 2 of Broadchurch. The pictures feature cast members including David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Andrew Buchan, Arthur Darvill, Jodie Whittaker, Will Mellor, Vicky McClure and Pauline Quirke.

Radio Times say of last night's episode:

Radio Times TV editor Alison Graham has hailed Broadchurch as, "about as good as TV drama gets," and last night's tear-jerking episode certainly didn't disappoint. 

Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan's portrayal of parents Beth and Mark Latimer - who experience every parent's worst nightmare when their son, Danny, is found dead on a beach in suspicious circumstances - was unbearably sad. Meanwhile David Tennant and Olivia Colman's on-screen chemistry as the police duo tasked with finding Danny's killer whilst struggling to forge a professional working relationship jarred fittingly with the drama's bleak setting. 

In yesterday's episode we saw the police uncover Danny's body before embarking on an investigation punctuated by growing interest in the case from the press.

Next week sees more action involving Arthur Darvill and Will Mellor as their characters are thrust into the limelight.

Radio Times say:

In next week's instalment the drama moves inside the church with vicar Paul Coates (Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill) presiding over his local congregation and the press. Meanwhile, shady character Steve Connelly is introduced – a telephone engineer whose special connection with the case lands him in hot water.

Meet The Characters Of Broadchurch

With the premiere of the new eight part series Broadchurch on ITV just over a week away, here's a chance for you to get to know some of the principal characters we'll be meeting over the next couple of months.

DI Alec Hardy

DI Alec Hardy is a newly promoted police detective who has moved from a large force in Glasgow to the small town of Broadchurch. His move has been under an unspecified professional cloud and he has been transferred to the tiny community to keep him out of the public eye. However, when he is called upon to investigate the death of eleven year old Danny Latimer he is cast back into the media spotlight and it is only a matter of time before his own secrets are laid bare.

Hardy is a difficult individual to work alongside, with clinical methods and extremely high standards that he expects others to meet. He is very much a big city cop, with plenty of experience in murder cases. However, he is unsociable, abrasive and unyielding, lacking the people skills that allow him to understand the needs and feelings of others. He finds it hard to work in the small community and has a low opinion of small, local forces.

Hardy is very different to his local colleague Ellie Miller, both professionally and personally: he is all for his work, with no life outside it, while she is sociable and well-liked. This adds to the initial animosity between them early on in their working partnership. Hardy has also been promoted into the position that Miller assumed was hers.

DS Ellie Miller

Ellie is a local girl, brought up in Broadchurch, and has a deep loyalty to the town. She has a family of her own and feels very much in the heart of a close-knit community where everybody knows everybody else. She has a close connection to the family of the dead boy: her own son Tom was Danny Latimer’s best friend, so she is personally and emotionally involved.

Ellie joined the police to serve her community and has worked her way up. She believed that it would be natural for her to step into the Detective Inspector role, so finds it extremely galling to have to accept the arrival of Alec Hardy who takes the job that she thought was to have been hers and having to take the lead from Hardy only adds to the bitterness that she feels towards him. She finds his methods difficult and ill-suited to the way that she and her colleagues have been used to working so their relationship is strained to say the least.

Ellie is a trusting person who is asked to examine the town that is her home and the people who live there with deep scrutiny by the intense and focused DI Hardy, forcing her to gain a fresh perspective on the community which she loves and to see her friends and neighbours as potential suspects.

Reverend Paul Coates

Paul Coates is a young priest in his first parish and it is one that should, by rights, be peaceful and trouble free. He has made great efforts to be embraced by the Broadchurch community, even teaching IT at the local school and playing 5-a-side football in addition to his church duties. Even the older residents of the town have accepted him and he is seen as something as a figurehead. He tries his best to offer support in the wake of the tragedy.

Paul is completely dedicated to the church and his role; however he too has secrets from his past and he is among those who becomes affected by the fallout from the murder.

It also seems that Karen has a particular interest in DI Hardy and may understand the reason behind his move to Broadchurch.

Broadchurch Star Vicky McClure Chats About The Drama

Broadchurch actress Vicky McClure has been talking about filming the show. The ITV1 drama which stars David Tennant as DI Alec Hardy is expected to air in early 2013.

It follows the events that unfold in a small community after a dead body is found washed up on the beach.
Vicky said: "It's been very interesting, I don't think there's too much I can say. But it's been a very interesting and powerful shoot."
Olivia Colman recently revealed: "I've now read scripts six and seven and still haven't got a clue who dunnit! And it might be me!"

Produced by Kudos Film and Television, Broadchurch features an amazing array of British acting talent including Jodie Whittaker as Beth, Andrew Buchan as Mark, Will Mellor playing Stephen Turner and Arthur Darvill as the town priest Paul Coates.

Bloodied and dirty, Danny Price has been found dead on an idyllic beach, surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face from where he may have fallen. Whilst his death remains unresolved, the picturesque coastal town of Broadchurch is at the heart of a major police investigation and a national media frenzy.

Written and created by Chris Chibnall, whose previous work includes United, Torchwood, Law & Order: UK and Doctor Who, Broadchurch is a story Chris has wanted to tell for some time.

“Broadchurch focuses on a small British community which finds itself at the eye of a storm. In the wake of one boy’s death, the residents of Broadchurch come under scrutiny and suspicion,” said Chris.  “It’s a story of scale and intimacy, as the lives of the characters are laid bare,” he added.

The sadness of losing a child consumes Danny’s family, Beth and Mark Price (Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan), their daughter 15 year old Lara and Beth’s mum, Liz as they attempt to cope with their grief.  Understandably they struggle to cope with the unwarranted attention heaped upon them.  Devastated by their loss, they struggle to relate to their friends, neighbours, the church, the press, and the police.  

David Tennant takes the role of DI Alec Hardy; an out-of-town, newly promoted police detective who takes the job local girl DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) believes should have been hers.

Ellie has to find reserves of patience and toughness to negotiate a professional relationship with the difficult and unyielding Hardy. Yet as the drama progresses, Hardy’s own secrets are laid bare. 

Ellie is also emotionally involved with this case.  Ellie’s son Tom was the dead boy’s best friend and she’s known Danny all his young life.  How could she not be drawn in?  But Hardy’s clinical methods force Ellie to see the community she grew up in through a different prism.

One by one the community of Broadchurch are drawn into the police enquiry. Local hoteliers and business people are implicated as the effects of a death in the community begins to impact on their hard-earned livelihoods. But can the town survive such a seismic shock during its economically crucial summer months? As the case drags on, the whole town will come under pressure: personal, economic, professional and emotional.

Broadchurch has been commissioned for ITV1 by drama commissioning team, Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes.

“Broadchurch tells the story of a small community and the devastating emotional repercussions for everyone caught up in the mysterious death of a young boy,” said Laura. “It’s not a ‘whodunit’ or a traditional police drama.  Chris Chibnall’s superb scripts have attracted a stellar cast,” she added.

James Strong (United, Downton Abbey, Silent Witness, Doctor Who) will direct the first two episodes and episodes seven and eight of the series.  Richard Stokes (Silk, Law & Order: UK, Torchwood) will produce the drama and Jane Featherstone (The Hour, Life on Mars, Law & Order: UK) will executive produce with Chris Chibnall.

The drama will be filmed on location in Portishead near Bristol and Dorset and filming begins from mid August and will continue until the end of November.

David Tennant has been confirmed as the star of the new eight-part ITV drama Broadchurch. The cast and plot details have been posted by media website Unreality TV and confirmed via Twitter by writer Chris Chibnall and producer Richard Stokes.

The brilliant cast is packed with some top acting talent: alongside David the drama features Olivia Colman, Vicky McClure, Arthur Darvill, Andrew Buchan, Jodie Whittaker and Will Mellor.

Tune In To True Love On BBC One Tonight At 10.25pm

The new Dominic Savage drama series, True Love, starts tonight with David Tennant's episode, 'Nick' airing on BBC One at 10.25pm (10.50pm for viewers in Northern Ireland).
True Love is an improvised series, exploring five powerful and overlapping love stories set in the same town.

Broadcast Date For True Love

True Love will begin on BBC1 on Monday 18th June according to the Times newspaper. The broadcast date was given in an interview with Vicky McClure, David Tennant's co-star, which was published in the paper today. It has still to be confirmed by the BBC Media Centre

David Tennant and Vicky McClure star in the first episode of the improvised drama as former lovers Nick and Serena who meet up again after a number of years. Dominic Savage created and directed the series which also stars David Morrissey, Billie Piper and Ashley Walters in other self-contained stories, and it was produced by Working Title for the BBC.

Love Life Update

As filming for David's new BBC drama, Love Life continues we have a quick catch up on the news so far.

It was revealed earlier in the week that both the BBC and ITV have commissioned new dramas with the same name, but whilst David's Love Life has already begun filming ITV's is still in the pre production stage. The Radio Times asks who should change the name here.

Although David and his former Doctor Who co star Billie Piper are starring in different episodes of the drama, it's a series of interlocking stories and so it's likely there will be character cross overs between episodes.

The Press Association released the following cast update for David's episode:

Former EastEnders star Lacey Turner and Bafta-winning actress Vicky McClure have been added to the cast of improvised BBC One drama series Love Life.
They join David Tennant and Billie Piper in the series of five overlapping stories created by writer and director Dominic Savage, which has just begun filming.
Lacey won a bundle of awards for her years playing Albert Square's Stacey Slater and last year appeared in BBC Three's live musical event Frankenstein's Wedding.
Vicky won acclaim for her performance in Channel 4's This Is England 86.
She will play Serena, the first love of Tennant's character Nick, who comes back into his life after many years with Lacey as her younger sister Michelle.
Also added to the cast are Jenny Agutter and Jaime Winstone.
The five programmes look at contemporary love stories and are set in the seaside town of Margate in Kent.
