Nokia: Releases 3D printing for mobile phone cases


Mobile phone producer Nokia has released open-source files that will let Lumia 820 smart phone user’s 3D print their own modified case. Files containing mechanical drawings, case measurements and recommended resources have previously released by the phone maker. Printing in 3D involves sending a design file to a printer that then forms a solid version of that entity by slowly building it up in layers of plastic.



Nokia has published mechanical drawings for the phone's back panel and case that will permit users with access to a 3D printer to customize and print their own case. The project makes Nokia one of the first huge electronics firms to critically back 3D printing. According to John Kneeland, community and developing marketing manager at Nokia, We are going to release 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices everything someone versed in 3D printing needs to print their own custom Lumia 820 case.

First Windows Phone 8 handsets unveiled by Nokia


Nokia has unveiled its initial handsets powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 OS. Nokia's loss deepened to 1.41bn euros in its last income quarter subsequent to it lost market share. Samsung overtakes Apple as No. 1 Smart phone Seller

Samsung Electronics Co. overtook Apple Inc. (AAPL) in the last quarter to become the world’s largest smart phone vendor along with a widening technology and legal battle between the two companies.

Samsung shipped 27.8 million smart phones in the last quarter, taking 23.8 percent of the market, Milton Keynes, U.K. - based Strategy Analytics said in an e-mailed statement today. Apple’s 17.1 million shipments, comprising 14.6 percent of the market, pushed the Cupertino, California-based company to second place. Nokia Oyj (NOK1V) maintained its third position, according to the statement.

Apple, which released its iPhone 4S this month, held the top spot for only one quarter after dislodging Espoo, Finland- based Nokia earlier this year. Samsung, based in Suwon, South Korea, has turned to Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android software to boost sales of its Galaxy smart phones and tablet computers.

“Samsung’s rise has been driven by a blend of elegant hardware designs, popular Android services, memorable sub-brands and extensive global distribution,” Strategy Analytics wrote. “Samsung has demonstrated that it is possible, at least in the short term, to differentiate and grow by using the Android ecosystem.”
