BP, Transocean shares shrug off U.S. oil spill report

Share in BP and Transoceanic rose on Thursday as investors bet a novel U.S. Presidential panel tale that spread the blame for the countries worst-ever oil spill meant the firms would shun the enormous costs of a gross neglect charge.

BP's London-listed share was up 1.6 percent at 507.6 pence at 1100 GMT (6 a.m. ET), while shares in Transocean's Swiss-listed shares were up 3.9 percent. The STOXX 600 European oil as well as gas sector index was up 1.2 percent, on higher oil prices.

One top 10 shareholder in BP said the fact that the blame for the binge was shared with drilling service provider Transocean and well cementer Halliburton optional the London-based oil chief was less likely to face gross disregard charges.

U.S. embassy in London was a target of UK suspects

The U.S. delegation in London was a aim of a group of men under arrest last week in Britain and charged with scheme to reason detonations and preparing acts of terrorism, the U.S. State Department said on Monday.

Twelve men were under arrest on December 20 in what British police said were counter-terrorism raids necessary to keep the public from the threat of attack. Three were later unrestricted devoid of charges, leaving nine who come into view in court on Monday to face the charges.

Asked if he was aware of reports the believes designated that the U.S. embassy in London was on their aim list, State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters: "I am aware and ... perceptibly our folks in London are conscious of this."

Thousands of UK students protest tuition fees hike

Tens of thousands of students demonstration noisily through London on Wednesday beside plans to triple university tuition fees, and a number of tried to occupy the head office of the governing Conservative Party, in the main street protest yet against the government's far-reaching severity measures.

Organizer said 50,000 students, lecturers and group were representative against plans to raise the cost of study at a university to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) a year — three times the present rate.

Hostility flared as a handful of people damaged windows in a high-rise building that houses traditionalist headquarters, as others lit a bonfire of placard outside the building.

Segway owner dies after falling off river cliff

LONDON – All police found at the bottom of a cliff was a man's body in a frigid river and a Segway, the 2-wheeled electric device that was supposed to revolutionize personal transport.

It was Jimi Heselden, a one-time laid-off coal miner turned self-made millionaire who had bought the Segway company only 10 months earlier. He apparently fell to his death while riding one of the sleek black-and-silver scooters. Authorities said Monday his body was found in the River Wharfe at the base of a 30-foot cliff.

Details remained sketchy — police say only that the death was not suspicious, meaning foul play is not suspected — but the incident seems certain to raise fresh questions about the safety of the Segway, which is banned on British motorways and in some U.S. cities because of safety concerns.

A witness reported seeing a man fall Sunday over a 30-foot drop into the river near the village of Boston Spa, 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of London. The remote, heavily forested area, not far from Heselden's country estate, is popular with hikers.
