In-App Purchases by Kids: Apple Will Refund $32.5 Million to clients

Apple Inc will repay clients at least $32.5 million to settle venerable complaints that the technology company billed U.S. consumers for charges incurred by children buying mobile apps without their parents’ consent.

Under the conditions of the settlement, announced on Wednesday by the national Trade Commission, Apple also will be necessary to change its billing practices to ensure it has obtained consent from consumers before charging for items sold in mobile apps.

Apple's App Store offers many games for kids, a large number of which permit in-app purchases to be made. These purchases can include virtual objects or currency, and characteristically allow faster progression in the game.

In an interior memo to workers, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained that the company decided to settle rather than risk a long and distracting legal battle, because the FTC’s proposals aligned with the company’s own intended changes.

Apple reveals two novel iPhone models: 5S and 5C handsets

Apple has unveiled two new handsets: the top-end iPhone 5S and a cheaper iPhone 5C at an occasion in California. The 5S introduces a fingerprint sensor built into the phone's main knob to recognize the user. The 5C comes with a synthetic back in a choice of colours. It marks a change of strategy for Apple which had not launched two distinct types of handset at the same instance before.

The iPhone is the firm's most main product in terms of earnings power. The new fingerprint system can be used to unlock the 5S and provide confirmation for purchases from Apple's online marketplace. The 5S' Sim-free price ranges from £549 for a 16 gigabyte version to £709 for a 64GB model. One analyst recommended the feature would help the handset stand out against its Android rivals.

Apple: Brazilian iPhone Vrademark Verdict

Brazilian regulators have ruled that Apple does not have private rights to use the iPhone trademark in the country. Still though the US tech giant has previously lodged an appeal against the decision with the Brazilian regulators. The ruling is the result of a local group, Gradiente Eletronica, registering the name in 2000, seven years before the US firm. Apple can persist to sell iPhone-branded handsets in Brazil.

But the conclusion means that Gradiente has a choice of suing for exclusivity in South America's biggest market. The Institute of Industrial Property supposed that its decision only applied to handsets, and that the California-based company continued to have exclusive rights to use the iPhone name elsewhere including on clothing, in software and across publications.

Apple and Samsung Insights

An influential Asian manufacturer, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, uses Google Inc's Android software to create smart phones and tablets that closely resemble the iPhone and the iPad.Samsung starts gaining market share, hurting Apple Inc's margins and stock price and intimidating its reign as the king of cool in consumer electronics.

A series of recent court rulings suggests that the smart phone patent wars are now grinding toward a stalemate, with Apple incapable to show that its sales have been critically damaged when rivals, notably Samsung, imitated its products. Samsung, meanwhile, has benefited hugely from the market insight it gained from the Apple relationship, and from producing smart phones and tablets that closely look like Apple's.

Apple: Innovative IPad Mini

Apple has unveiled its widely-anticipated 7.9in tablet, the iPad Mini. The iPad Mini will compete straight with cheaper similar-sized tablets lately launched by Google, Amazon, Samsung and others. The iPad Mini launch ends years of speculation that Apple was considering launching a new, smaller version of its bestselling iPad range.

During the presentation, Mr. Schiller stressed out the importance of being able to hold the device in one hand a nod to the more travel-friendly appeal of the slighter devices. However, Adam Leach, principal analyst at Ovum, said he had expected the iPad Mini to be more competitively priced. It forecast that Apple would hold a 68% share of the marketplace in 2012, compared to 29% for Android tablets.
