Egypt's Mubarak back in court over protest deaths

The trial of former Egyptian Hosni Mubarak has resumed on Saturday, in what was his 2nd court appearance since his release from Cairo's Tora prison last month.

In a state television broadcast of the court proceedings, Mubarak was seen in a wheelchair, dressed in a jacket and wearing dark sunglasses.

The 85-year-old Mubarak is accused of complicity in the deaths of some 850 people during the 2011 uprising against his rule.

Lawyers defending Mubarak, his interior minister Habib al-Adly, his 2 sons Ala and Gamal and 6 security chiefs argue Islamists were primarily responsible for violence during the 2011 revolution.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of death.

In June 2012, Mubarak had been convicted complicity in the deaths of protesters and sentenced to life in prison, but a retrial was ordered in January after he appealed.
