KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- An Australian man said he's been acquitted of drug trafficking charges in Malaysia that would have resulted in a death sentence had he been convicted.
Domonic "Jude" Bird, of the Perth suburb of Success, said he was arrested in March for allegedly trying to sell 167 grams of methamphetamine to an undercover police officer in Kuala Lumpur.
Under Malaysian law, conviction on possession of more than 50 grams of meth carries a mandatory death sentence.
Bird told the Australian Broadcasting Corp., prosecutors presented their evidence against him and as soon as they were finished the judge dismissed the charges, saying prosecutors hadn't made their case.
The police officer who arrested Bird was subsequently convicted of intimidating and bribing a witness in another case.
Bird said he's waiting for visa problems to be sorted out but is eager to "get my arse out of here."
