Police said Friday that a 73-year-old man, who had been sentenced to death for his involvement in the abduction of three men and the murder of two of them, has died on death row.
Yasuhiro Sako was arrested on charges of robbery and murder, before being sentenced to death in 2004 for his involvement in the kidnapping of three company presidents in Iwate, Fukushima and Chiba Prefectures between 1986 and 1991, NTV reported.
Prison authorities in Sendai, where Sako was being held, say he had been suffering from bronchitis for several years. His health reportedly took a turn for the worse last month, resulting in his death from acute pneumonia on Thursday night.
Currently, there are 133 prisoners on death row in Japan.
