SAN FRANCISCO -- California prison officials have joined other states in defying a federal government order to turn over a key drug needed to execute condemned inmates.
At issue is the drug sodium thiopental. States turned to overseas suppliers when the sole domestic manufacturer of the drug ceased its production in 2010.
A judge in March said the Food and Drug Administration erred in allowing the foreign-made drug into the country and ordered it to get the drugs back from the prisons. States have been refusing to comply with the FDA orders.
On Friday, California joined the protest. California and the other protesting states contend they aren't bound by the ruling made by a federal judge in Washington D.C. They also argue that the judge was wrong and urge the FDA to appeal.
