As the debate over the death penalty continues in India, a group of prominent Australian lawyers say the time is ripe for the 10-South East Asian nations of the ASEAN grouping to commit to a regional agreement on the execution of foreigners.
The lawyers want an agreement from countries that do have the death penalty to ban the execution of offenders from non-death penalty countries.
The call came as a court in northern Vietnam, sentenced six people to death for heroin trafficking although all appear to be Vietnamese citizens
The Victorian branch of the International Commission of Jurists says Indonesia, with the support of Australia, is in a prime position to lead the way.
