Benin’s Lawmakers Vote in Parliament to Abolish Use of the Death Penalty

Lawmakers in Benin agreed to abolish the use of the death penalty in the West African nation, said Mathurin Coffi Nago, president of Parliament.

“Benin wants to promote human dignity and progressive development of human rights,” he told reporters in Porto Novo, the capital.

Members of Parliament cast 54 votes in favor and 5 votes against the measure, while 6 abstained, he said.
