Alabama death row inmate dies in apparent suicide

A state death row inmate died yesterday morning in an apparent suicide, the Alabama Department of Corrections announced today.

William A. Snyder, 48, died in his cell at Holman Correctional Facility. In a press release, the department said the cause of death is under investigation by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

Convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death out of Talladega County on April 7, 2000, Snyder served more than 11 years and 3 months on Alabama's death row.

A report in The Daily Home newspaper gives this account of Snyder's crimes and subsequent conviction:

In 1996, Snyder was convicted of fatally beating 72-year-old Dixie Gaither and her son Carey Milton Gaither, 45, while burglarizing their home.

Snyder then used a gun belonging to Mrs. Gaither and killed 37-year-old Nancy Burkhalter, Carey Gaither's girlfriend.

Snyder was tried and convicted of 3 counts of capital murder and he was subsequently sentenced to death.

The state court of criminal appeals reversed the conviction in 2001, but the state Supreme Court later restored the original verdict and sentence.
