Indonesia: 6 death sentence convicts have escaped

As many as 6 convicts on death row have escaped from prison as of Oct 2010, the Attorney General's Office has reported.

AGO spokesperson Babul Khoir said there had been 116 cases of public criminal offences in which the death sentence had been handed down.

The 6 escaped convicts are Jufri Bin H Muhammad Dahri, who escaped from Maros prison, South Sulawesi, Imran Sinaga, who escaped from Riau prison, Rambe Hadipah Paulus Purba, who escaped from Riau prison, Taroni Hia Lias Roni who escaped from Padang prison, Irwan Sadawa, who escaped from Padang prison, and Dodi Marsal.

The majority of the criminal offences were drug-related, Babul said.

"The details are as follows: 55 cases of murder, one case of thievery and assault, 58 cases of narcotics, and two cases of terrorism," he said.

Out of the 116 cases, aside from the 6 who escaped, a further 6 had their sentences reduced to life sentences, and one convict’s sentence was reduced to 12 years in prison. 3 have died.
