BEIJING, China — China has sentenced two men, including a French citizen, to death for drug trafficking.
The official Xinhua News Agency said Sunday the two were given the death penalty after being convicted of making and selling large amounts of crystal methamphetamine in Guangdong province in southern China.
The Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou also confiscated the personal assets of the two men, who were identified as Chan Thao Phoumy and Xie Weiming. Chan was born in Guangdong but also has French citizenship.
China has a growing drug problem, and says drug cases shot up 16 per cent last year from 2008, with a shift toward newer types of narcotics, including methamphetamine and ketamine.
