A New Orleans man who awaits sentencing for stealing from the nonprofit capital appeals law agency he headed since 2004 has permanently resigned from the practice of law.
Jelpi Picou, 49, pleaded guilty earlier in February to 5 counts of theft for bilking more than $200,000 from the Capital Appeals Project between 2005 and 2009.
He resigned abruptly in November as state officials were headed down to New Orleans to inspect the financial books, and 1 month later voluntarily let the Louisiana Supreme Court suspend his law license.
Picou is due for sentencing at Criminal District Court on June 25, before Judge Robin Pittman. He faces up to 10 years in prison on each count.
Picou asked the state Supreme Court to accept his permanent resignation rather than face the lawyer disciplinary process. The court granted his resignation on Tuesday, prohibiting him from seeking admission to the practice of law in any jurisdiction.
