Iran publicly hanged a man convicted of drug trafficking in the western city of Ahvaz Thursday, Fars news agency reported.
The report identified the men only by his initials as A.A., and said he had been arrested with 1.375 kilos (about 3 pounds) of heroin.
The latest hangings bring to at least 64 the number of people executed in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports. Last year, at least 270 people were hanged.
Tehran says the death penalty is essential to maintain public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.
Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking, homosexuality and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.
