Iran hangs 2 drug traffickers

Iran has hanged 2 men in a prison in the central city of Isfahan who were convicted of drug trafficking, the Kayhan newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The report identified the men sent to the gallows as Morteza and Azizollah, and said both were convicted of trafficking narcotics. No additional information was given.

The latest hangings bring to at least 63 the number of people executed in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports. In 2009, at least 270 people were hanged.

Tehran says the death penalty is essential to maintain public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking, homosexuality and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.
