Dr. Paul Shrode, whose medical testimony in Richard Nields' 1997 murder trial was questioned last week in a clemency ruling by the Ohio Parole Board, was fired yesterday as acting chief medical examiner in El Paso County, Texas.
Shrode, the highest-paid county employee at $254,000, was fired because of an accumulation of public complaints and false statements on his resume regarding his degree and credentials, according to the El Paso Times.
Shrode worked with the Hamilton County coroner's office in 1997 and testified at Nields' trial about the strangulation-death of Nields' longtime girlfriend, Patricia Newsome. His testimony was prominently cited as being in error in the parole board's 4-3 vote recommending clemency for Nields.
Dr. Robert Pfalzgraf, Shrode's supervisor in Hamilton County, called his findings not "scientifically supported."
Gov. Ted Strickland will decide whether Nields should be spared or executed as scheduled June 10.
