The state of Oklahoma has executed a man who was convicted of 1st-degree murder in the 1993 fatal beatings of his former girlfriend's daughter and grandchild.Julius Ricardo Young (pictured) was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m. Thursday at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.
Young was convicted of killing Joyland Morgan and her son, Kewan, whose bodies were found Oct. 1, 1993, at their Tulsa apartment.
Prosecutors say Young was upset that Morgan's mother had recently ended their relationship. They say he broke into the family's apartment and beat the 2 with a baseball bat.
The 60-year-old Young maintained his innocence at an Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board hearing in December, but the board denied his clemency request.
All of Young's appeals had been exhausted.
Young becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Oklahoma, and the 92nd overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1990- Only Texas (449) and Virginia (105) have executed more individuals since the death penalty was re-legalized on July 2, 1976.
Young becomes the 5th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1193rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
