Iran: Stoning sentence confirmed for two women charged with adultery

According to the Prisoners Unit of Human Rights Activists in Iran, branch 12 of the Court of Appeal in western Azarbaijjan confirmed the death by stoning sentence for two defendants accused of adultery.

The defendants have been identified as 30 year old Sarimeh Ebadi (mother of two children) and 32 year old Vali Janfeshani (mother of one child). They are sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery. The sentence was approved and confirmed Wednesday January 6, 2010 by the provincial Court of Appeal.

Currently, the two defendants are being held in Orumieh’s central prison (northwestern Iran). In addition to the vague and ambiguous judicial process that resulted in the sentence, the defendants were also not able to adequately defend themselves since they were deprived of the right to select their own defense lawyer.

The punishment of death by stoning is considered one of the most prominent issues of concern and objection for human rights activists.
