After announcing the death sentence of 2 prisoners, the Iranian government revoked their birth certificates, according to Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran.
On January 18, 2 prisoners were taken to court from Ward 4 of Gohardasht prison to be read their death sentence. They were then brought to the registration department where their birth certificates were canceled. They have been told that their sentence will be carried out within the next 10 days.
According to reports, one of the 2 prisoners, Miri, was under 18 when he committed his crime.
The other prisoner, Aidin Shariatmadary, 28 years old, had been detained for almost a year when his sentence was issued.
The act of revoking birth certificates is unprecedented in the legal system of the Islamic Republic. Aside from being against the rights of the prisoner, this policy leads to a variety of legal problems for the prisoners and their families.
