Saudis restore death penalty for Kohail

Ottawa sought clemency for Mohamed Kohail yesterday after a Saudi court reinstated a death sentence against the Canadian citizen in connection with a death during a schoolyard brawl in 2007.

But the opposition said the Canadian government is not doing enough in Mr. Kohail's favour, calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to raise the thorny case with Saudi King Abdullah at the G20 summit in London.

Mr. Kohail recently saw his death sentence reinstated by the Jidda General Court after Saudi Arabia's highest court, the Supreme Judicial Council, overturned his planned beheading earlier this year.

The decision was announced in Saudi media yesterday, and the matter was quickly raised in Parliament as Mr. Kohail's supporters hope that the top court will be pressed to overturn the death sentence.

"The Prime Minister is with the King of Saudi Arabia in London," Liberal MP Dan McTeague said during Question Period. "Will he finally act directly and raise this serious miscarriage of justice with King Abdullah? What will it take for him to act and show some leadership?"
