Saudi Arabia: murderer executed

Authorities have beheaded a Saudi man convicted of murdering his mother and an Indonesian maid under the influence of drugs.

An Interior Ministry statement says Mohammad bin Salem was executed Tuesday in the city of Najran after being convicted for shooting to death his mother and the maid under the influence of hashish. The statement says he thought the women were casting spells on him.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed usually with a sword.

Monday's execution brings to 14 the number of beheadings in the kingdom this year, according to an Associated Press count. In 2008, 102 people were beheaded.
