Iran: three hanged for drug trafficking

January 2, 2009: Iran hanged three people for drug trafficking in public in a square in the central city of Qom and another two in the eastern city of Zahedan, state media reported.

Pictures from Qom showed the three blindfolded men, their bodies hanging limply from nooses attached to cranes. The three hanged in Qom were Safarali Nazari Ashkar, convicted of trafficking 455g heroin, Sohbatollah Malaki, for trafficking 170g, and Habib Oliaei, convicted of smuggling 590g, according to the official IRNA news agency.

"By implementing God's law, we are increasing security in society and we are sending a message that Qom is not a safe haven for those who break the law," said local judiciary official Hoda Torshizi.

State media said that the two hanged in Zahedan had been found guilty of transporting 5.25 kg of heroin.
