Iran: new execution of child offender

Iran has once again executed a prisoner who was a minor when he committed the crime for which he was sentenced to death.

Homayoun Chabestari, 21 years old, was hanged on September 29 in the Kermanchah prison, in Iranian Kurdistan. Six juvenile offenders have been executed in Iran over the past 10 months. In July 2007 iran-resist.org released a list of 73 juvenile offenders sentenced to death and waiting to be executed once they reach their 18th birthday. Some of the juvenile offenders executed in 2008 were not listed in this 2007 document, like Homayoun Chabestari who has been recently executed or Rahim Ahmadi whose death sentence was upheld on September 28, 2008.

The death sentences of four death row inmates detained in the Bouchehr prison were confirmed last week and the executions should be carried out very soon. Reports indicate that some 80 potential death row inmates -- that is waiting for their sentence -- are being detained in the Bouchehr correctional facility.
